At TCML – New York Taiwan Center, learning Mandarin goes beyond the classroom. Our Taiwanese Cultural Activities & Mandarin Meetup series brings together language learners and community members through hands-on cultural experiences and relaxed, real-life Mandarin practice.
From June to August 2025, TCML hosted a monthly cultural workshop series designed to enhance student engagement, strengthen community connections, and introduce new learners to Mandarin through culture.
Each session focused on a unique Taiwanese cultural theme:
Dumpling Workshop|
The series kicked off with a dumpling-making workshop, where participants explored traditional Taiwanese ingredients, folding techniques, and the cultural stories behind this beloved dish.
The afternoon was filled with laughter, delicious aromas, and lively Mandarin conversations as participants made, ate, and learned together.

Mahjong Meetup|
In July, participants gathered around Mahjong tables to learn the basics of this iconic game while practicing Mandarin in a social setting. The interactive nature of Mahjong created a fun and engaging environment for language use.

Indigo Dye Workshop|
The final session featured a hands-on indigo dyeing workshop inspired by traditional Hakka craftsmanship. Participants created their own unique pieces through folding, tying, and dyeing techniques.
The workshop was filled with creativity and cultural exchange. Special thanks to the Hakka Association of Greater New York for sharing the history and techniques behind this traditional art form.

Community & Student Experience|
Many participants shared that these workshops were not only fun, but also helped them feel more connected to the language and culture. For many, it was their first time experiencing Taiwanese traditions in such an interactive setting.
