Mooncakes, BBQ & Mandarin 🥮

Our Fall 2026 Mandarin classes are in full swing! Ahead of the Mid-Autumn Festival, TCML students have been exploring Taiwanese holiday traditions through food, stories, and hands-on cultural activities.

On Saturday, September 19, students experienced everything from Taiwan’s unique Mid-Autumn barbecue tradition and seasonal pomelos to making festive pastries and learning traditional legends—bringing Mandarin beyond the textbook and connecting language learning with Taiwanese culture and everyday life.

🔥 Taiwanese Mid-Autumn Traditions: BBQ, Mooncakes & Pomelos

In our Upper Intermediate 401 class, students explored some of Taiwan’s unique Mid-Autumn Festival traditions, from barbecue and mooncakes to seasonal pomelos and playful pomelo-peel hats.

The class learned about the well-known phrase 「一家烤肉萬家香」, associated with a classic Wan Ja Shan barbecue sauce advertisement. Through the lesson, students explored the interesting connection between advertising, popular culture, and Taiwan’s modern Mid-Autumn barbecue tradition.

Students also enjoyed mooncakes (月餅) and pomelos (柚子) together and had some fun wearing “pomelo hats” made from the peels. It was a lighthearted way to experience how the Mid-Autumn Festival is celebrated in everyday life in Taiwan.

Through food, Mandarin, and cultural sharing, students not only learned about the traditions of the Mid-Autumn Festival but also gained a closer look at Taiwanese culture and everyday life.

🥮 Making Mid-Autumn Treats Together

Meanwhile, students from our Beginner 101 and Elementary 201 classes joined FASCA youth participants at the Culture Center of TECO in New York for a hands-on Mid-Autumn Festival experience.

Together, participants made two festive treats:

🥮 蛋黃酥 (dàn huáng sū) — a flaky pastry with a rich filling and salted egg yolk

🌕 冰皮月餅 (bīng pí yuè bǐng) — soft, no-bake “snow skin” mooncakes

Beyond making and sharing festive treats, participants also learned about the traditions and stories behind the Mid-Autumn Festival, including the legends of Chang’e (嫦娥) and the Jade Rabbit (玉兔).

The activity brought TCML students and FASCA youth together through food, culture, and conversation, offering another way to experience Taiwanese culture beyond the classroom.

💛 Learning Mandarin Through Culture

At TCML–New York Taiwan Center, language learning goes beyond vocabulary and textbooks. Cultural experiences help students understand how Mandarin connects with real life while introducing them to the traditions, food, stories, and everyday culture of Taiwan.

From mooncakes and traditional legends to pomelo hats and Taiwan’s unique barbecue culture, these Mid-Autumn activities gave students a chance to learn Mandarin through culture—and experience a little taste of Taiwan right here in New York.

月餅、烤肉與華語｜TCML 中秋文化體驗 🥮

2026 秋季華語課程熱烈進行中！中秋節前夕，台灣華語文學習中心 的課堂也充滿了濃濃的節慶氣氛。從烤肉、月餅和柚子，到親手製作中秋點心、認識嫦娥與玉兔的故事，學員一邊學華語，也一起體驗台灣人熟悉的中秋節文化。

9 月 19 日星期六，不同班級也透過美食、故事與動手體驗，把華語帶出課本，從生活中認識更多台灣文化。

🔥 台灣人的中秋節：烤肉、月餅與柚子

在中高級班的課堂中，老師帶著學員認識台灣人怎麼過中秋。除了少不了的月餅和柚子，當然也要聊聊台灣很有特色的中秋烤肉文化！

課堂中特別介紹了大家耳熟能詳的廣告口號 「一家烤肉萬家香」，從萬家香烤肉醬的經典廣告，聊到烤肉如何成為許多台灣人過中秋時熟悉的活動。

光用說的當然不夠！學員也一起吃月餅、品嚐應景的柚子，最後還戴上用柚子皮做成的「柚子帽」，讓大家體驗了一回很有台灣味的中秋節。

透過這些生活中熟悉的節慶元素，學員不只學習華語，也更認識台灣人過節的方式與日常文化。

🥮 動手做蛋黃酥與冰皮月餅

另一邊，入門班與初級班的學員來到紐約華僑文教服務中心，與 FASCA 海外青年文化志工一起動手做中秋點心。

這次大家挑戰了兩款應景點心：

🥮 蛋黃酥——層層酥香的外皮包著內餡與鹹蛋黃，是許多台灣人中秋節少不了的經典滋味。

🌕 冰皮月餅——柔軟 Q 彈的冰皮包裹著香甜內餡，不需烘烤，是口感清爽又別具特色的中秋點心。

除了自己動手做、一起品嚐，大家也認識了中秋節的由來與傳統故事，包括大家熟悉的嫦娥與玉兔。

從揉麵糰、包餡到完成自己的中秋點心，TCML 學員與 FASCA 青年一邊動手做、一邊交流，在紐約一起度過了一個充滿台灣味的中秋文化體驗。

💛 從生活與文化中學華語

在 TCML–New York Taiwan Center，我們希望華語不只是在課本裡學，也能從生活中真正感受到。

節慶、美食、故事，甚至是一頂有點可愛的柚子帽，都可以成為認識華語與台灣文化的方式。從中秋烤肉、月餅和柚子，到嫦娥與玉兔，學員透過課堂裡的文化體驗，在紐約一邊學華語，一邊感受滿滿的台灣中秋味。
